The immeasurable health-benefits of an adventurous life

When I was approached by the UK-based charity ‘Dementia Adventure’ to appear on their podcast, the answer was a resounding yes!

Click here to listen to our deep dive into how adventure prevents dementia.

Dementia Adventure is dedicated to enhancing the lives of people affected by dementia through nature-based activities. Many people with dementia experience a shrinking world due to loss of independence and erosion of social bonds. Dementia Adventure aims to compensate for these losses by promoting activities that allow individuals and their carers to regain a sense of freedom and connection with the world around them. The charity encourages positive risk-taking for those living with dementia, believing that with the right support, many people with dementia can lead more active and fulfilling lives.

From August to October 2024, 61-year-old Harriet Thomas walked 900 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise awareness and funds for Dementia Adventure, in memory of her mother, who passed away with dementia.

Harriet’s journey was documented in the podcast ‘The D Tour’, which captured the serendipity of her day-to-day exploits, along with the experiences of people living with dementia, such as singing legend Tony Christie.

The D in ‘The D Tour’ stands for Dementia, a Detour from everyday life, vitamin D from sunlight, and a Different way of thinking about dementia. The aim of the podcast is to encourage listeners to embrace the present moment, find joy in simple pleasures, and challenge the perception that the essence of a person disappears when they live with dementia. You can listen to The D Tour podcast here.
