Improving your sense of smell improves your memory

I took this photo at the fresh produce markets in Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, USA. Each fruit has its own distinctively delicious aroma. Take just 20 seconds to appreciate the smell of everything you eat before you consume it. Whenever you add herbs and spices to your cooking, likewise pause and take in the scent. Becoming more aware of different aromas will improve not only your sense of smell (known as olfaction) but also your memory and overall brain function. How?

I answered this question in one of four poster presentations I delivered at the Australian Dementia Research Forum held in Perth from 3rd to 5th June 2025. You can view all my posters here.

The audience were all health professionals and scientists so the terminology is quite technical, but you’ll appreciate the overall message.

Please share this Health-e-Byte with anyone who is curious about the latest brain research.
